Neurofeedback is a non-invasive type of biofeedback that uses sensors to measure brainwave activity, providing real-time visual or auditory feedback to how the brain is reacting to experiences, with the goal being to help individuals learn to self-regulate their brain function and their emotional experiences and reactions. It is an incredibly effective tool for the treatment of various problems such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain/illness, ADHD, sleep issues (insomnia or hypersomnia), emotional and physical trauma, and the promotion of healthier experiencing of emotions and experiences (e.g., aid individuals along the autism spectrum) to live a more fulfilling life. â€‹

Somatic Experiencing is a body-oriented, bottom-up technique to connect clients to their internal experiences and promote emotional and behavioral control.

  • Techniques

    • Tracking — Clients are guided to monitor physical sensations
(e.g., tension, warmth, tingling, etc.) associated with a stimulus
      or external stressor

    • Resourcing — Clients then identify and focus on internal or external experiences that bring feelings of safety, calm, control, strength, and acceptance

    • Titrating — Clients are guided slowly and gradually through their personal experience (e.g., trauma) while learning to read and regulate internal experiences

    • Grounding — Clients are then directed to physically connect with the immediate environment and engage in mindfulness skills to stay present in the moment (decrease dissociation) by feeling the physical experiences around them

    • Body Awareness/Mindfulness — Clients are taught and cultivate skills of nonjudgmental, moment-to-moment awareness of physical sensations both internally and externally

What is Somatic Experiencing

  • Focuses on Body Sensations (not cognitions or thoughts)

  • Process emotions by better understanding the body sensations associated with different emotions

  • Bottom-up approach and focused on interoception (internal sensations) and proprioception (body movements)

  • Trains the nervous system to "unstick" their experiences from the fawn-freeze-flight-fight response

What do they treat

  • ADHD

  • Anxiety (e.g., performance anxiety)

  • PTSD

  • Depression

  • Sleep issues

  • Autism (esp. emotion suppression & Dysregulation)

  • Addiction (substances & sex)

  • Learning difficulties

  • Migraines & headaches

  • Traumatic brain injury & concussion

  • Chronic pain and illness (e.g., fibroymyalgia, restless leg syndrome)

  • Emotion dysregulation (e.g., anger)

  • Behavioral dyscontrol

What Neurofeedback looks like

  • It is NONINVASIVE

  • There is NO PAIN with the treatment

  • Electrodes are placed on the scalp

  • The electrodes detect brain activity

  • The electrical activity is amplified & processed

  • Use operant conditioning to train your brain to self-regulate

  • Receive moment-by-moment awareness of their brain's activity as they process their experiences

  • Understand your brain activity and regulate your brainwave patterns as you talk about your experiences

Who are good candidates

  • All age groups

  • Anyone struggling from the disorders or concerns listed

  • Those struggling with neurological conditions due to sports
    or physical injury (e.g., concussions)

  • Athletes, executives, performers, musicians, etc., who struggle with performance anxiety or want to improve performance

  • Those interested in NON-DRUG alternatives to healing
    and recovery
